Area Code 757, You Are On Notice

A fantastic article today on the front sports page of the Virginian-Pilot newspaper in Virginia Beach about the meteoric rise of WVU running backs coach Chris Beatty from the high school ranks in the Hampton Roads to Division I football.

Some favorite quotes from the article

In much the same way he once dared opposing area coaches to stop his quick-striking offense, Beatty is putting Virginia and Virginia Tech on notice that they’re in for a fight over the state’s top prospects, especially in the 757 hotbed.

It’s one thing for WV-based media to say this, but it’s especially encouraging when the Virginia Beach media confirms it. Another:

“(Virginia) Tech basically owned the 757,” said (Tajh) Boyd, who played one season for Beatty at Landstown. “But with Coach Beatty at West Virginia, it’s going to be a crazy battle.”

Not a great time to be a Hokie.

I was pretty critical of some of the assistant hirings at the time, but Beatty has proved himself so far just in recruiting, and I’m sure that player development and game planning will also prove to be strong points. It’s easy to be swept away by some newspaper puff and summer-time optimism, but everything so far is moving in a very positive direction. The main objective now will be to try to keep the coaching staff in tact as much as possible, with Beatty especially attractive to other schools or possibly pro teams with his amount of experience at a relatively young age.
