Georgetown 72, WVU 55
14 March 2008
I really just don’t have that much to say on this game. Georgetown is #1 in the Big East for a reason, actually for a lot reasons. And while I said all year that they are a lot more than just Roy Hibbert, and they showed that in the quarterfinal game, Hibbert was as assertive as I’ve seen all season in this game and dropped 25 points and 13 rebounds including 10 offensive rebounds. WVU just had no answer most of the night. Even when WVU was clicking on offense, which was happening from time to time, they simply could not get the defensive stops. Joe Alexander looked human for the first time in a couple weeks as he was held to 5-of-16 shooting and a mere 12 points. Da’Sean Butler was once again quietly the glue that held WVU together with a 16-point effort. WVU grabbed 19 rebounds for the game (Remember Hibbert himself had 13 for the Hoyas) and 12 turnovers to boot. This game was definitely played in a much more physical fashion and was not called anywhere as tight as the UConn quarterfinal game.
Again, like I said it’s not a game you should expect to win against the #1 seed team, and WVU didn’t play anywhere close to well enough to pull off the upset. But three games in three nights does that to a team, and I honestly don’t see Marquette or Pitt (looks like it will be Pitt) with much of a chance at all against the Hoyas tomorrow night. Now, WVU awaits their NCAA tournament selection on Sunday evening. I think you will see the Mountaineers as an eight-seed, meaning a tough first-round matchup and a possible second-round clash with a #1 seed.
