WVU has not lost at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium since 1995 when the Mountaineers fell 23-20 to the Pirates. West Virginia has won seven straight against the Pirates, last losing in 1999 at Charlotte’s Ericsson Stadium by a margin of 30-23. WVU’s last non-conference road loss came at Virginia Tech in 2005.

WVU will play for the third time ever in the Rocky Mountain State. WVU lost to Colorado State 50-14 in 1978 in Fort Collins, but returned to avenge that loss two years later in a 52-24 victory. WVU lost its Big East opener last season at South Florida after winning its 3 previous conference openers. WVU has won its first Big East home game every season since 2002.

WVU has won six straight in this series, the longest winning streak either team has held in the 55-game series history. WVU has won those six games by a combined score of 206-74. Syracuse’s last win in Morgantown came in 2000 when ‘Cuse QB R.J. Anderson engineered a 84-yard, late fourth-quarter drive for the winning touchdown for a final score of 31-27.

WVU has defeated the Huskies in each of the last four seasons since UConn joined the Big East in football. Connecticut was the runner-up in the Big East standings to WVU last season. WVU has beaten Connecticut by a combined margin of 179-64 in those four victories, including a 37-11 triumph in their last visit to East Hartford.

The Mountaineers are 3-0 against Cincinnati since the Bearcats joined the Big East in football. UC last defeated WVU by a 15-13 margin in 2003, in Morgantown as a member of Conference USA. The Bearcats also managed a 7-7 tie against WVU in 1940 at Old Mountaineer Field. WVU has won the three Big East contests with UC by a combined margin of 108-47.

WVU was upset upon its last visit to Louisville in 2006 by a margin of 44-34 in arguably the biggest win in UL school history and a matchup between Top 5-ranked and undefeated teams. Both Rich Rodriguez and Bobby Petrino who coached in that game have left their respective schools. WVU is 2-1 against the Cards in the Big East era with both wins coming at Mountaineer Field. The Mountaineers’ last win in the River City came in 1989 by a 30-21 margin, but WVU has yet to win in the Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium facility.

WVU will have to play through its entire season before having a chance to avenge last season’s two losses in the final two games. Pitt’s 13-9 victory in Morgantown will stand out in the littany of Backyard Brawl legend as the loss quelled WVU’s national championship hopes. WVU won the last outing at Heinz Field, 45-27 in 2006. WVU has taken two of three since the opening of Heinz Field as the Panthers’ home stadium in 2001. WVU holds a 21-42 record all-time against the Panthers in Pittsburgh, but have won 4 of the last 6 games overall in the series. WVU is 15-8-2 in the series since 1983, but lost 7 straight before that, making the last 32 years of this series a dead heat.

USF is the only team to have beaten WVU in two of the last three seasons. In fact, the Bulls have won two consecutive games against the Mountaineers, stunning WVU in Morgantown in 2006 by a 24-19 margin. WVU won the first matchup between the schools in 2005 by a 28-13 score.
